Original mobile applications

Many web services and applications also exist as smartphone model applications to take advantage of the touch screen.
There are also games that turn it into a portable console. They can be in 3D and look like computer games from 10 years ago. In 2000, the 15-inch CRT screen often had a resolution of 800x600 pixels, which corresponds to the resolution of smartphones.
And there are a lot of applications that can run on a computer that we don't use because they have to start immediately and anywhere.

Here are some examples of the amazing capabilities of today's smartphones...

And examples of applications that take full advantage of these capabilities...

Localized search

Using GPS, searching for a restaurant or any service can guide you to what's nearby.

Tourism in reality augmented reality

Still using GPS, a built-in compass and, of course, a webcam, you can display information superimposed on the locations you point to with your smartphone.
As such, it serves as a tourist guide. See Augmented reality.

You can also combine augmented reality and search engine and display a message superimposed on the camera image showing what you are looking for.

Remote control

Some ISPs offer an API to turn a mobile phone into a touchscreen remote that's easier to use than the one that comes with your network.
This allows you to select a channel, start recording and perform actions that are not possible with a standard remote control.

Butler

In other words, a control center for home devices, including light. Android @ home is an Android app that automatically controls your home. For example, control lighting as needed. Applications will depend on the developers.

Smart alarm clock

By putting your phone on the bed while you sleep, it can use its accelerometer to determine your position and determine what phase of sleep you are in. It won't wake you up if you're in deep sleep, but will wait until you wake up to sound its alarm.

Finder AR aircraft

Point your phone at the sky to see the position, speed and weight of the nearest plane.
It also displays the flight number, departure airport and destination airport.
To do this, the application uses the A systemDS-B system, which is now used on airplanes and transmits a signal containing this data.

Poster Translator

In a foreign country, point the camera at a poster or restaurant menu written in an unknown language and it will be translated into your chosen language.

Calculating distance

The Acoustic Ruler application can determine the distance between a point and an aircraft (up to 25 meters) using a speaker to emit sound, a microphone to receive echo and calculating the time between them. The ambient temperature is used here as an adjustable parameter...

Botany

The free app gives us the name of the tree from the photo of the sheet using a visual recognition program. It was developed by Columbia University, the University of Maryland, and the Smithsonian Institution.
As long as the database remains local enough. See leafsnap.

Robot and Mobile

Robot control

Using a mobile to control a robot is a specialty of Cellbots. This site provides software to manage various hardware that gives the "body" and advanced mobile capabilities. In fact, the mobile can now become an integral part of the robot, becoming its brain and command center. The photo on the right shows an example of a tank robot that can interact with its environment thanks to a mobile webcam and data processing capabilities. If this mobile runs on Android, it's only natural that it could control a companion robot. At the same time, the companion robot must be LEGO Mindstorms NXT, a small entertainment robot that can be assembled and programmed.

Transformed into a pinball machine

This is an accessory and part of the software. For $40, you get a miniature pinball machine paired with a program and using a smartphone screen to represent the ball's course, complete with flashing bumpers.

Drone piloting

As shown in this video, with a Wi-Fi connection and a mobile phone, it is possible to remotely control a flying device, in this case a helicopter, take an image through a camera, and, in combination with augmented reality, pilot in a semi-artificial universe.
This demonstration was conducted by the French company Parrot .

Microscope cost

€10

This invention received three awards, including one from the National Science Foundation, totaling $510,000.

By connecting this practically inexpensive mini-microscope to a mobile phone, you can get a mobile laboratory that replaces very expensive equipment!
A device placed on a drop of blood can send the image to a remote lab for real-time analysis.
This microscope has no lenses; increase is achieved by light-emitting diodes which pass through the sample, wherein the image is captured by a mobile phone camera. In fact, we get a hologram that allows you to reconstruct the image using computer processing that can be automated, while the remote site returns the diagnosis after comparison with its database.
Anyone can use it, without any special training.

See UCLA and Lab on a Chip sayty.

Seismic detector with MyShake

This application, developed by a team of seismologists in California, uses an accelerometer in combination with GPS as an earthquake detector. He is able to indicate the location of the earthquake. Mobile phones then serve as an early warning system: they warn in advance of impending earthquakes, and can also warn of tsunamis.

Pulsator

Runware offers software that interacts with the sensor, usually mounted on the back strap, for a more comfortable display and heart rate. It comes with an accessory to extract the signal from the belt.
In addition to improved visibility, the mobile phone allows statistics and intelligent processing, linking heart rate to geographic and field data.

Medical care

Using a sensor connected to a mobile phone, you can, for example, check your blood sugar level.
Application available in 2011.

Stock market trading

Robinhood allows you to buy and sell shares on the exchange without paying any fees. It works internationally. On Android and iOS, but you must be a US resident.
