Dmoz Catalog

dmoz-geek

It was the largest website directory used by Google's search engine until 2010. It was closed in 2017.

The repertoire was founded by Rich Skrenta and Bob Truel in 1998, working for Sun, under the name Gnuhoo. Since this name is disputed by the Free Software Foundation, it becomes NewHoo. Yahoo then in turn disputes "Hoo ," and this stuck with the purchase of Netscape in October 1998, the final name becoming Open Directory Project.
The goal of competing with the Yahoo directory was achieved in April 2000 with the listed 1,600,000 URLs (fewer sites).
The name of the site, Dmoz, comes from Directory Mozilla, an open version of the Netscape browser launched after the company was purchased by AOL.

The handbook is an unprecedented source of documentation and a useful piece of reference information about the website, although it has lost its meaning over time.

The site announced on March 1, 2017 that it would close as of March 14.

The number of unique visitors per day averages 210,000 and reaches 250,000, each consultant averaging 3.3 pages (Alexa figures).
Dmoz has a very limited number of employees in different countries: USA (Dulles), India, Australia, China.
Although webmasters tend to detract from the importance of Dmoz, the Alexa graph on the right shows that its audience grew in 2010 and 2011.
