Retrieving and using a domain name

The domain name is registered for one to two years in the registry - the official index for the extension type. You can register a domain with the registrar for a longer period, only in the registrar's account.
There are several "registries," extension managers, managed by different organizations depending on the TLD, domain top levels.

The dictionary (top right) will provide a definition of terms such as registrar, TLD, redirects, delegation, etc.

Select a domain name

The domain name should be easy to remember, so either be short or match the current formula.
But how the domain name and its extension, TLD, are formed has a big bearing on search engine results.

If your hosting is mutual, then if you are with a space provider, know that not all extensions are necessarily accepted.... Com, net and org present no problems. Other extensions such as info, biz, fr, and eu may not be supported for a particular offer or cause additional costs.

The extension, or TLD (Top-Level Domain), is taken into account by search engines, in particular Google. The site in FR comes in a better position to search in French (or in France).

The name must have more than one letter. ICANN prohibits domain names in one letter, even with some exceptions: I.NET, Q.COM, Q.NET, X.COM, Z.COM and G.COM, the latter of which is Google.

See also Domain name value. Fortunes are spent on acquiring the best names.

Extension selection

We usually prefer the .com extension, as this is the default extension for Internet users. But you need to know that just like .net, .org, .name, .jobs, .tv, .cc, .com is under US jurisdiction. So the domain can be seized by the American authorities (just a request to the registrar), even if you live on the other side of the world and force your site to be posted there.
So before you start an activity like an online game, think about it. Even if your activity is legal in your country, it may not be legal in the USA!

We are used to using country extensions because they matter, like me (me, actually Montenegro) co (commercial, actually Colombia).
But some of them are dangerous. For example, Nigeria (ng domain) has a long history of name theft, and these thefts are committed by the Nira management organization itself .

7 new extensions appeared on January 29, 2014: .bike, .clooting, .guru, .holdings, .plimbing, .singles and .venturs.
There's a lot more to come. On 10 June 2014, the .uk extension is available to replace .co.uk.

Domain name and brand

In fact, you should not have a trademark in the domain name, as well as the name of the company or patronymic. But a domain registered before a trademark is filed cannot be questioned by the trademark owner and even the brand name can be challenged.

DNS - Domain Name Server

To change the DNS and force your hoster (not the registrar) to manage them:
- Hosting must provide primary and secondary DNS. (for example, dns1.iqlevsha.ru and dns2.iqlevsha.ru).
- Go to Registrar admin panel and specify these two DNSs.
- Go to the hoster administration panel and specify the domain name.
It takes at least 24 hours for redirection to become available.

Some sellers (not listed here) offer "parking": your domain name is reserved but not associated with your hoster or IP address. Some registrars (not specified) force you to change DNS. This is tantamount to parking.

Redirect URL (rewind, hover) to site

To reuse the domain name, DNS must remain in registrar control:
- Go to the registry redirect dashboard and specify the site URL, for example: https://www.iqlevsha.ru/.
- Wait at least 24 hours.

If the domain is redirected by a frame job, it will appear in the browser URL field, not in the target. Search engines will not take it into account.
If you have a small hosting, you can redirect the domain to another using a rule from the .htaccess (unix) file that specifies redirection 301 or 302. In this case, the original domain name will be ignored, only the target will appear and will be taken into account by the search engines.

Transfer of registration records

Domain transfer from one registrar to another is carried out upon request in the new registrar.

Transfer is allowed for a certain period of one or two years. When the domain update is offered by the current registrar, it is too late to transfer to another registrar.
Some registrars refuse to transfer the domain to another registrar (none in the list below), but this is not legal under ICANN rules.
First you need to check the status in the whois database. It can be: ACTIVE or REGISTRAR-LOCK. We may also meet with a PROHIBITED CUSTOMER that is equivalent to LOCK.
OK does not mean ACTIVE. Inactive  status makes transfer impossible, but you can change the status in the administration panel.
Both registrars will contact you if the contact email address is yours and you have to respond within 5 days.

Conditions for checking the translation:
- Domain created more than 60 days ago and not updated in the last 46 days.
- A domain expiring after more than 30 days for some registrars, but for ICANN there is no time in this direction. The transfer can be carried out even after its expiration.
- email addresses of valid contacts (whois-based check).
- The domain is not locked, the state is "active ," not "locked."  This does not apply to FR, EU, BU.

See ICANN transfer rules.
See also conditions depending on domain type, links below.

The rules for transferring the owner are similar, but instead you need to check the email of the owner's contact.

Contact information

Four contacts are specified for the domain and are displayed in whois when the information is not hidden.

Owner Contact (owner-c)

It gives the name, address and email of the owner or owner of the domain name. He has full authority over the domain and can only allow the transfer of ownership.

Admin Contact (admin-c)

It has the ability to change the registration number (but without the owner) and information related to the domain, including DNS and other contacts. He is contacted by e-mail when changing the registrar.

Technical Contact (tech-c)

It can change DNS, so it associates the domain with the hosting. It can be the registrar himself. It handles DNS issues.

Billing Contact (bill-c)

He gets bills and can't change anything when in the domain.

Master recorders

A future website requires a domain name that is part of links.

Registration conditions vary depending on the types of domains. For example, when changing the registrar for com, net, org, the registration period is extended, but for FR and the EU, we again start from zero on the date of transfer.

The following registrars provide free DNS management, A-Records, or redirection.

Second markets

Along with the registration and management of domain names, several derivative activities developed...

Councils

There are many suggestions (albeit disappearing) next to the leading registrars, but some items need to be checked.

Parking

Paring means placing a blank page or list of ads. In both cases, this should be avoided. The page will be seen by unwanted or useless search engines, which will take a long time to put before scanning it again.

Multiple domains

Given the canonical attribute, if the URL of all pages is defined by the attribute, there is no disadvantage in using multiple domains for the same site.

Risky upgrade

The domain name is updated in a year or two years, minus a period of 1-2 months.
Registration over two years old does not give any guarantees, you will not register on the Internet for more than a year or two, and if the registrar disappears, you will lose your bet.
You must renew your registration exclusively with the original registrar and no one else. An example of a scam is "Domain registry of America," which asks you to update your domain purchased elsewhere, which at best will force you to subsequently transfer the domain to them.

Transfer not possible

There are a certain number of tricks that are used to keep savers from leaving the house, and transferring your domain to another registrar is cheaper. Suppliers in the above list do not engage in this practice.

Customer theft

Domain Registry of America convicted in the United States on a complaint Register.com. However, it continues to send an official letter to domain owners offering to pay for their domain updates through its services (on less favorable terms), allowing them to believe that this is part of the usual domain update process.

Statistics and new extensions

How many registered domain names?
As of January 2016, the number of names filed in millions depending on expansion was:

Year COM SHOPPING MALL THIMBLE NETWORK GREAT BRITAIN ORG NATIONAL CONGRESS INFORMATION UNITED EUROPE BIZ FR
2016 124     18.8     16

Germans are the EU's most fancied with a 30% depot ahead of the Netherlands and France. In 2011, CN lost 5 million registrations due to more complex conditions, but is now the most commonly used gTLD. Tk free.

Since 2012, registrars can, with certain terms and conditions of the funds, create their own extension and offer domains for registration under this new extension. See Free gTLDs.
